Raising the question as to why volunteers matter is as important as stating ‘Why are you holding a torch in the dark?’ The dark often questions the unknown and we wonder how to make it easier for ourselves. All over the world, there are communities that are in need of a voice that acts as a beacon for those that don’t have a voice. Half the world’s population aren’t blessed with the basic necessities the better half is provided. The ever changing society constantly moves forward however the cry of a person from these communities doesn’t.

The world is chaotic and can be flipped upside down with a single person causing the beginning of a movement. That’s what volunteers do, they create a wave of emotions and impact not only for the eyes longing for someone to notice their struggle but also for the entire community.

Over 1 billion people in the world volunteer to make a change for taking ownership of social responsibility or for several reasons. NGO’s do not hold enough manpower to cause a drastic change and a collective effort from the community is required. As a volunteer you become the legs and hands of the NGO leading them to a successful output and for the community to a stable future. As a volunteer we know the constant wonder starts with ‘I should but I don’t know where to start.’ or ‘Will this even make a difference?’

Volunteers create an opportunity for a happier future for generations to come. Impact cannot be entirely measured accurately but they are single handedly the resources of an NGO. Coming fromfor a volunteer, “ Any miniscule effort in making a difference for society is a driven result.” A change as small as not littering at the beach anymore can cause the wheels of change to turn with a single momentum.

A tiny dose of volunteering not only benefits the community but also the volunteers themselves. It has significant effects on your mood and lifestyle psychologically. It gives a sense of purpose and joy in returning your share of effort to the betterment of the society. It doesn’t stop there, what you do provides a feeling of accomplishment and boosts your mood. It shapes your identity and you become a part of a whole different community.
