Do you enjoy quotes? I love them. I love how they capture sentiment so precisely, and articulate everything I feel in ways that I couldn’t have imagined but are so arresting in the feelings they capture. I love the sense of knowing that someone somewhere at some point in life felt exactly as I did, regardless of context, that somethings are universal. Quotes can be so evocative, as succinct as they are accurate.
There are some fairly famous quotes — oft repeated, oft quoted. Some of these, some of my favourites, may fall under that category. Some may be novel to you. At least a few though will make you pause and ponder.
Be Who You Are — Dr. Seuss
“Be who you are and say what you feel, because those who mind don’t matter and those who matter don’t mind.”
Delicious Ambiguity — Gilda Radner
“I wanted a perfect ending. Now I’ve learned, the hard way, that some poems don’t rhyme, and some stories don’t have a clear beginning, middle and end. Life is about not knowing, having to change, taking the moment and making the best of it, without knowing what’s going to happen next. Delicious Ambiguity.”
This Life Is What You Make It — Marilyn Monroe
“This life is what you make it. No matter what, you’re going to mess up sometimes, it’s a universal truth. But the good part is you get to decide how you’re going to mess it up. Girls will be your friends — they’ll act like it anyway. But just remember, some come, some go. The ones that stay with you through everything — they’re your true best friends. Don’t let go of them. Also remember, sisters make the best friends in the world. As for lovers, well, they’ll come and go too. And baby, I hate to say it, most of them — actually pretty much all of them are going to break your heart, but you can’t give up because if you give up, you’ll never find your soulmate. You’ll never find that half who makes you whole and that goes for everything. Just because you fail once, doesn’t mean you’re gonna fail at everything. Keep trying, hold on, and always, always, always believe in yourself, because if you don’t, then who will, sweetie? So keep your head high, keep your chin up, and most importantly, keep smiling, because life’s a beautiful thing and there’s so much to smile about.”
Be Someone — Coco Chanel
“How many cares one loses when one decides not to be something but to be someone.”
Twenty Years From Now — H. Jackson
“Twenty years from now you will be more disappointed by the things that you didn’t do, than by the ones you did do. So throw off the bowlines. Sail away from the safe harbor. Catch the trade winds in your sails. Explore. Dream. Discover.”
